Nicholas Totos spent his childhood assisting his family at their South Melbourne Market stall, Emerald Hill Deli – where he was first given the moniker of “deli boy” by local customers. Now, he’s taken that name and opened his own shop specialising in home-style panini and open-faced sandwiches opposite the market, alongside his business partner Andreas Londono.

Deli Boy’s menu takes influence from both Italy and Spain, including the Basque region where Londono has family. Creamy Basque cheesecake is made in house, while French pastries are outsourced from wholesale Ivanhoe bakery The French Breakfast Bakehouse.

Fluffy Zeally Bay focaccia is filled with deli goods imported from Italy and fresh produce from the South Melbourne Market, like mortadella and stracciatella packed in with truffle honey-glazed eggplant, or a smoked ham and gruyere number that takes the classic ham and cheese sanger to new heights. Ready-made pintxos (Spanish bar snacks), beer and wines by the glass are also available, perfect for summer drinks in the dog-friendly courtyard or at the sunny streetside seating.

Good to know: Learning Spanish? All of Deli Boy’s staff speak the language and are happy to help customers practise while ordering.
