Aziz Pekakgul sentenced over Craigieburn knife assault at Broadmeadows Magistrates’ Court

A jilted business owner grabbed a large knife and drove to his best friend’s workplace, where he yelled “I’m going to kill you” and chased him out of the building, a court has heard,
Aziz Pekakgul, 44, fronted Broadmeadows Magistrates’ Court on Monday where he pleaded guilty to a string of charges including assault with a weapon and possession of a knife.
The court heard Pekakgul had discovered his wife was having an affair with his former best friend early last year.
The 44-year-old escalated matters when he drove to his friend’s Craigieburn workplace on May 10, 2023.
The court heard he asked his former friend about the affair before going to his car and grabbing a large knife which he then pointed at the victim.
Pekakgul chased the victim around the workplace and down the driveway, repeatedly saying “either way, I’m going to kill you”, thr court was told.
The victim managed to drive away. When police later spoke to Pekakgul, he told the officers he was only wanting to get the truth out of his friend.
In court, Pekakgul’s laywer Tass Antos said Pekakgul ran two businesses — one related to hire cars and the other panel beating — and had two children.
The lawyer described the offending as “objectively serious” but also said it was “a disproportionate response” to finding out about the affair.
The court heard Pekakgul did not plan to bring the knife but, rather, one was already in the car as he carried an assortment of different tools for work.
Magistrate Gregory McNamara told the court he was sceptical of this explanation and described the offending as “extremely serious” and involving multiple threats to kill.
Pekakgul was convicted of each of the offences and fined $4500.
