Do you know a little legend in your sporting community - perhaps it is your very own cherub?

The Sunday Mail, with the support of the Fairmont Homes Group, has launched a new campaign – Little Legends – aimed to celebrate all aspects of kids’ sport, team and individual.

Nominations are being sought from families who are asked to share any proud parent moments of kids playing sport across the state.

It might be a milestone game (first or 100th with a club) or where their child has overcome adversity to take part in sport, in the community or at school: think, sportsmanship, camaraderie and simply the joy of participation

“We wanted to do something fun to celebrate junior sport – sometimes it is the big moments, such as an amazing game-winning goal, that are worth cheering but often it is the small things that warm our family’s hearts most … the firsts, the friendships or a show of resilience,” Sunday Mail editor Jessica Leo-Kelton said.

Each week the finalists will appear on Advertiser.com.au and in The Sunday Mailwith the weekly winner receiving $100.

Three-time Olympian and former Australian basketball player Rachael Sporn, is one of a swag of SA sporting greats to support the campaign, saying the benefit to kids of playing sport are many fold.

“Not that kids realise it at the time but sport teaches you about so many life skills and at the same time they are developing friendships that will last a lifetime and of course it keeps you fit and healthy,” Sporn said.

While Adelaide Crows AFLW superstar Erin Phillips, who looked up to Sporn as a young sportsperson, said sport “brings people together”.

“It teaches you resilience, teaching you about winning and losing, it teaches you to be part of a team, it grows your confidence, especially for girls,” she said.
