The Lord Nelson Brewery Hotel
15/20
Contemporary$$
Boasting barrel-loads of ambience, convict charm and prizewinning home brews, the Nelson builds its reputation on being Australia's oldest pub brewery and cements it with its bar food. The menu is limited but delivers, from nicely done nibbles (olives and feta in a herb-infused marinade), to pub staples (chicken curry with pappadams and yoghurt, and fish 'n' chips in tempura ale batter washed up with a wasabi mayo). The one dessert - apple pie with vanilla bean ice-cream - is a winner. And the makings of a ploughman's lunch sit behind the bar for when the kitchen's closed.
