The Botanist
12.5/20
Modern Australian$$
The name, in case you are wondering, is a reference to an eccentric, globe-trotting English botanist named Gerard Fothergill, who apparently moved to Australia late in life and ran a small bookshop on this site until his death in 1932. Hence the charming logo (pith helmet, spectacles, bow tie) and Justin Walshe's eccentric, globe-trotting menu. Sliders are the go here, especially the well-spiced tabbouleh and hummus-laden lamb kofte, and the fresh, tangy crab and prawn versions. Good Tahitian-style ceviche of mahi mahi is oddly served with toast, while pizzas are model-thin and super crisp. An East African chicken curry seemed an odd listing, its sauce strong on the cardamom. More appropriate for the happy, rowdy and slightly shrieky crowd in the loud and low-lit room are warm, lightly scorched quesadillas filled with chorizo, beans, potato and cheese to help soak up the cocktails. A creme brulee is flavoured with lavender, a suitably botanical touch.
