The gentrification of King’s Cross continues apace, but Teddy, tucked into a character-filled corner site on a shady backstreet, taps just a little of the spirit of the past.

The look-at-me courtyard and vibrant, burgundy-hued rooms channel the area’s heyday, and the vibe continues with the playlist – Pointer Sisters, Prince, Whitney, Depeche Mode – and a menu of snacky drinking food.

Vermouth-marinated olives and a colourful cocktail to begin, perhaps, followed by a pork and lobster sausage roll served in a Barbie-pink paper bag. Curls of pasta in cacio e pepe sauce spiked with native pepperberry are oven-baked until crunchy, and a crusty pork schnitzel is good to share.

Run by Kirk and Nick Mathews Bowden of next-door Ezra on an “affordable, accessible, approachable” ticket, it’s the sort of place you could, potentially, end up dancing.
