A man charged with attempted murder over a Boxing Day shooting southwest of Brisbane has been accused of “stalking” his “victim” for more than an hour first.
Glen Kenneth Edwards faced Ipswich Magistrates Court on December 27 charged with attempted murder over the incident at Rosevale, in the Scenic Rim.
Police allege a 22-year-old Rosevale man was travelling along Rosevale Road in a Toyota HiLux around 6am on December 26 when he pulled over, exited his vehicle, and was shot at by 53-year-old Mr Edwards.
Police prosecutor Bridie O’Shea said it would be alleged Mr Edwards had “stalked” two individuals, including the 22-year-old, as they drove back to Rosevale from Kippa-Ring that morning.
She said Mr Edwards followed them at a “very close proximity” for over an hour before reaching Rosevale, where the 22-year-old got out of his car.
“A rifle has been produced out the window and a shot has been fired very narrowly missing the (alleged) victim’s head,” Snr Cst O’Shea said.
“Then another shot has been fired, where there has been a round located in the vehicle.”
Snr Cst O’Shea said the complainants got back into their vehicle and fled, and Mr Edwards then also “fled the scene”.
She said police tracked Mr Edward’s vehicle, and “given some past history” they also employed an emergency response team.
“The defendant has been brought into custody after about an hour pursuit through bushland,” Snr Cst O’Shea said.
She said a “cursory glance” of Mr Edwards vehicle located “over 19 weapons” – for which she said charges were still in the process of being brought.
Mr Edwards is currently charged with attempted murder, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, authority required to possess explosives, obstruct police, and possession of a knife in a public place, and unlawful stalking/intimidation/harassment/abuse.
Defence lawyer Matt Gemmell said he had instructions to make a bail application at the matters first mention on Friday, but Snr Cst O’Shea requested an adjournment to Monday so that the new charges could be laid.
She said the prosecution were also waiting for more information from “extensive reports in relation to the defendant’s ongoing mental health”.
Mr Gemmell said Mr Edwards seemed able to provide instructions when he spoke with him this morning, but that the interactions Mr Edwards had reportedly had with police yesterday were “wildly different”.
“I’ve received information from the defendant himself that he has been treated for mental health issues before, but he has declined to see Mental Health this morning,” he said.
Acting magistrate Rob Turra adjourned the matter to Monday and remanded Mr Edwards in custody until that date.
