Emergency services scramble to downed plane in Coondoo

Emergency crews rushed to an incident involving a light aircraft that reportedly crashed east of Gympie on Thursday morning.

A Queensland Police Service spokeswoman said the call came through about 11.30am that a light aircraft had either crashed or made an emergency landing in a paddock in the countryside east of Gympie near Neusavale or Kin Kin.

She said that there were initial reports there had been two people flying in the plane when it went down but that they were both out of the plane.

Emergency service crews have been sighted entering a property on Stewart Rd and disappearing into thick bushland on the edge of paddocks in Coondoo.

Coondoo is about 30km east of Gympie and close to the Noosa hinterland.

It was initially reported by emergency services that a woman and another person were in the crash.

A Lifeflight spokesperson, however, later said the rescue chopper flew a man to a Sunshine Coast hospital this afternoon.

“It’s believed the pilot was on a training flight exercise when the aircraft careered off the runway and landed in trees upside down at the end of the strip,” they said.

The rescue chopper landed near the incident and the Lifeflight critical care doctor worked with Queensland Ambulance Service paramedics to treat the patient for a suspected leg fracture.

The Lifeflight spokesperson said the patient, aged in their 20s, was transported to Sunshine Coast University Hospital for further treatment.

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokeswoman later said two men were flown to the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane, one in his 30s with life-threatening leg and suspected internal injuries and a second man, in his 20s, with significant leg injuries and cuts.

The plane was initially reported to be off the Gympie Kin Kin Rd near its intersections with Couval Lane and Moran Group Rd.
