Court denies deathbed wish to award $1.2m to estranged lover

A man’s last wish to prevent an estranged lover from inheriting just over $1 million has been dashed by a unanimous ruling of the Federal Court of Australia after nearly five years of legal battles.

James Nguyen was awarded about $1.2 million in super death benefits despite his former de facto partner Pino Corbisiero texting his sister early on the morning he took his life on September 1, 2019, to say that he wanted to leave his property and assets to his family “and no one else”.
