Credible appointments will improve Reserve Bank board

The treasurer has selected two good candidates and should be congratulated for shoring up the RBA at a pivotal time in the inflation fight.

Treasurer Jim Chalmers has selected two credible new Reserve Bank of Australia monetary policy board members who will strengthen the central bank’s decision-making and maintain its independence approaching an election.

Former Bendigo and Adelaide Bank boss Marnie Baker and economist Renée Fry-McKibbin will become interest rate-setters in place of Elana Rubin and Carol Schwartz, who will transition to a new RBA governance board.
