Thanks to a relentless increase in asking prices year-on-year, a house, once considered a doable dream, is beyond all but anyone working in the upper echelons of finance, dentistry or IT – or basking in familial good fortune. Not forgetting those lucky souls who collect houses, a species otherwise known as miners or partners in law firms.

You might wonder if the same fate is in store for the humble watch. Once a tool cowering modestly under a cuff, the watch, like a house, has grown in size, options and features; it’s now something to show off rather than consult, and costs more than a house used to.
