APRA moves to make smaller banks more competitive

The country’s banking regulator says it will loosen rules in the hope of helping smaller lenders compete against their larger rivals, including reporting less data and possibly allowing them to hold less capital.

In a speech to the Australian Banking Association conference on Thursday, Australian Prudential Regulation Authority chairman John Lonsdale said he would “streamline, simplify and clarify” processes that could result in mid-tier banks reducing the amount of capital held against loans.
