Nowhere gives out-of-towners a warmer welcome than Bennelong. First, the grandeur of stepping inside the city’s most famous landmark. Second, the floor team, who make you feel like they’ve been awaiting your arrival since the day you booked your flight.
The three-course a la carte menu in the main dining room is a romantic expression of Australian cooking, from a delicate XO enhancing sweet squiggles of southern calamari, to crisp duck breast buzzed with Kampot pepper or a jammy, decadent take on the lamington. All of it works with a serious wine list that pulls from every growing region in the country.
Locals looking to dodge the tourist crowd should book a later sitting, or head to the bar for cocktails, caviar and prawn toast. But with the Harbour Bridge in full view, don’t overthink it. There are few better places to embrace being a tourist in your own city.
