Ploos
A splash of the South Aegean on Sydney Harbour.

This sparkling stretch of Sydney Harbour is typically haunted by the cruise-ship crowd, but the view of the Opera House from an outdoor table at Ploos is too good for globetrotters alone. There’s something delightful about being a tourist in your own town – even if a plate of twice-cooked Abrolhos octopus, basted with Cypriot-style carob glaze and served with creamy white taramasalata and caper shoots, transports you straight to the Mediterranean. Whole Humpty Doo barramundi is splayed and chargrilled for super-crisp skin and topped with a Greek take on Cafe de Paris butter featuring preserved lemon, shinos spice and splashes of sweet fortified wine. Peas braised in wild-thyme tea with dollops of koukofava broad bean puree and crumbly coconut feta are a perfect travelling companion. So, too, a refreshing Fix Hellas lager or three. What more might a Sydneysider seek, so close to home.
