Jim Chalmers told Reserve Bank governor Phil Lowe about two weeks ago that he was not going to have his tenure renewed. By then, the Treasurer had all but settled on replacing him with deputy governor Michele Bullock.

Chalmers, whose job was to take a recommendation to the cabinet, began sounding out others as to his prospective choice. This included business and union leaders, and his boss, Anthony Albanese.
