While Prime Minister Anthony Albanese promised in the lead-up to the May 2022 election that Australians would be better off under his government, Labor’s term in office has been hampered by global forces including high inflation and a sharp rise in interest rates.

As a result, Albanese has stopped fighting the assertion that voters are now worse off than they were three years ago. However, he now contends their plight would be even more dire had Opposition Leader Peter Dutton been in power.
