Twenty years ago, the idea that Kreuzberg could become a gourmet hotspot would have been risible. The gritty Berlin neighbourhood was seen as distinctly edgy, a place where multi-generational multicultural families mixed with a random assortment of fringe dwellers.

Today, those same streets – still lined with Middle Eastern grocers and kebab stands – are luring some of Berlin’s hottest chefs.
