Central banks enter dangerous new territory

A global surge in inflation is exceeding central bank targets in many countries, at a time when unconventional monetary policies are still being pursued in scale.

Central banks and their bankers are under pressure. They always are, but we have entered new territory in recent months.

There have been miscommunications before. The Bank of England (BoE) was described in 2014 as an “unreliable boyfriend”, in hinting at rate increases but then failing to deliver.
