It is rare for a treasurer and a central bank governor to be at odds over the economic outlook.

But that is exactly what is happening right now. Reserve Bank governor Michele Bullock contends that the economy is still too hot, despite successive quarters of weak GDP growth. But Treasurer Jim Chalmers says prolonged high interest rates are “smashing the economy”.
