Ten years ago, Sam Murphy moved to New York from Melbourne with professional services firm Deloitte, where he was working in audit. Renting a shoebox apartment in the storied West Village, he witnessed scenes being filmed for movies on his way to work and often bumped into the actor Hugh Jackman, who lived a few blocks away.

Aside from adding a colourful chapter to his life, it turbocharged his career, particularly when Murphy added an MBA into the mix and moved into banking, tripling his salary within just a few years.
