I tested my VO2 max – here’s what I learnt about fitness and longevity

VO2 max was once a fitness metric that only elite endurance athletes cared about. A growing body of research linking it to healthy ageing has changed that.

I’m running on a treadmill with a thick rubber mask covering my nose and mouth and a heart rate monitor strapped around my chest.

The mask – which is measuring the amount of oxygen I breathe in and the amount of carbon dioxide I breathe out – is so snugly fit that I can’t fully see where my feet are landing with each step, which means I’m reasonably worried about tripping over.
