Hampden crash: Bruce Highway closed near Mackay

A Logan man has died and two others have been injured after a head-on collision on the Bruce Hwy near Mackay.

A Logan man in his 70s has died and two others have suffered injuries in a two-vehicle crash near Mackay on Sunday morning.

Two utilities, one towing a caravan and the other a trailer, collided head-on the Bruce Highway at Hampden.

The crash occurred about 10.15am and Queensland Ambulance Service confirmed critical care paramedics responded to the incident and assessed four people.

The Munruben man died at the scene after being trapped inside the crumpled wreckage for about 30 minutes.

Three people were taken to Mackay Hospital in stable conditions.

Those injured included a female in her 70s with facial injuries, a female in her 40s with arm and chest injuries and a male in his 40s who was uninjured, but transported as a precaution.

RACQ CQ Rescue attended the incident but was not required to transport anyone to hospital.

The helicopter, with a doctor and critical care paramedic on board, landed on the closed highway near the intersection with Zunkers Road.

A spokeswoman for the service described the scene as ‘horrific’, with debris strewn across the stretch of road.

As a result of the crash, the Bruce Highway was closed in both directions at Hampden and motorists have been told to expect three-hour delays.

Two Clayton’s Towing trucks, three fire trucks, ambulance services, multiple police vehicles and the RACQ CQ Rescue chopper were on scene before 12pm.

Fire crews could be seen hosing away debris from the road.

QFES Inspector Sven Diga said the debris clearance would continue with one truck remaining at the scene.

He praised the response of emergency services to the crash.

“All the crews, the fire, ambos, police and RACQ CQ Rescue did an absolutely amazing job,” he said.

“With the thinking, the interoperability.”

It is the fifth serious vehicle incident in Central Queensland in days, and the third involving a caravan, with four people killed across the region since Thursday, August 4.

On Thursday an Andergrove woman, 64, died when the car she was a passenger in collided with a 4WD towing a caravan near Emerald.

In Rockhampton on Thursday a man, 82, died in hospital a week after a car he was a passenger in collided with a 4WD towing a caravan in Koongal.

On Friday, an 82-year-old man died after his vehicle left the roadway and rolled at Mount Tom, south of Gladstone.

Saturday was another tragic day for the Mackay region, with a man fatally crushed by a tractor at Koumala.
