Nine Dalby, Western Downs people who have pleaded guilty to assault, violent incidents named

Graphic warning: From a 50-year-old man who slashed another man’s face in a frightening drive-by attack to a 33-year-old woman beating an elderly lady, these are some of Dalby’s most recent acts of violence.

Violence in the Western Downs has continued to soar despite many of the perpetrators being sentenced in courts over the past 12 months.

Many of these attacks can leave victims battered, bruised, and scarred, and could leave lasting trauma on them for the rest of their lives.

From a 23-year-old man who flogged his victim with a plank of wood to a 27-year-old worker who bashed a man at his worksite and more, here are nine Western Downs people who have been sentenced for violent crimes.

A man was left with a horrific facial injury after an Oakey man struck him with a tool during a disturbing night-time attack on a quiet street.

Dalby Magistrates Court was told David Nicholas Carne brutally attacked the other man after a short dispute on June 8, sparked by the victim confronting him about revving his engine in the street.

Police prosecutor Derek Brady said the 50-year-old Carne stopped his vehicle while the man approached the driver’s side door, and Carne struck the other man in the face with a jack handle before driving off.

The victim was left with a “significant cut” to his forehead, which required 10 stitches.

Carne pleaded guilty to assault occasioning bodily harm while armed. He was sentenced to six months’ jail, wholly suspended for 18 months.

He was also ordered to pay $500 compensation to the victim.

A Brisbane father who whacked a recent chemotherapy patient with a large plank of wood has been handed jail for his brutal assault.

Kahuihonepotaka Duncan Smith Bason was 21 years old when he was walking along Drayton Street in Dalby on the evening of May 8, 2020, when two men asked how he was going from across the street.

Crown prosecutor Amy Stannard told the court the former aquatic centre worker replied to the two men to not come near him, as he “wasn’t in a good mood”.

Dalby District Court heard as the two men approached, the now 23-year-old grabbed a 50cm plank of wood and struck one of the men in the face before fleeing the scene.

Bason pleaded guilty to assault occasioning bodily harm while armed and was sentenced to nine months’ jail, but released on immediate parole.

A 38-year-old violent Cunnamulla man walked from court after being sentenced for bashing two of his former partners less than two years apart.

Crown prosecutor Matthew Le Grand said William Walter John Jordan’s first assault occurred in April, 2019 in Chinchilla, where he attacked his ex-partner.

Jordan spent almost a year in custody before being released on bail, and then punched his new partner multiple time in the body and face at Leslie Dam in November, 2020.

Jordan pleaded guilty to two counts of assault occasioning bodily harm, possession of utensils or pipes, and possession of property suspected of being used in connection with the commission of a drug offence.

He then pleaded guilty to obstructing police, breaching bail, failing to appear, and public nuisance.

Jordan was given a total of 36 months’ jail, but was released on immediate parole with 625 days in pre-sentence custody declared as time served.

A woman was back behind bars after she punched a Chinchilla policeman in the face while he was surrounded by a mob of abusive bystanders.

Dalby Magistrates Court was told police attended a Mayne Street address to arrest a wanted person, rousing the ire of Ashleigh Meagan Lawton.

Police prosecutor Derek Brady said police found themselves surrounded by aggressive onlookers who were swearing and yelling at them during the arrest.

Lawton then punched the arresting officer in the cheek with a semi-closed fist, the court heard.

Lawton pleaded guilty to serious assault on police and was sentenced to six months’ jail, which was wholly suspended for 12 months.

A Jandowae mother was jailed for her savage assault on an elderly woman and her daughter during a disturbing neighbourhood dispute.

Dalby District Court heard Jessica Ellen Creevey had been screaming repeatedly in Jandowae while her victims slept next door on April 23, 2020, with the disturbance prompting the elderly mother to hose the other woman.

The victim claimed the 33-year-old vaulted the fence and jumped on her, where she was “punched to hell” by Creevey.

The court heard the daughter rushed outside and pulled Creevey off her mum, with Creevey then turning her violent rage on the daughter and punching her repeatedly.

Creevey pleaded guilty to serious assault, and assault occasioning bodily harm, and was given a head sentence of 12 months’ jail.

Judge Burnett then activated her suspended sentence to run concurrently with her sentence, and set a parole release date of July 18, 2021.

An unprovoked attack at a Dalby bottle-O was witnessed by shocked onlookers when a man repeatedly punched a woman in the head after he struck her friend in the face.

Dalby Magistrates Court heard Nigel Robert Turnbull was seen on CCTV footage approaching two people at the Windsor Hotel on December 26, 2020.

Police prosecutor Derek Brady said the 34-year-old punched the man in the face once, then punched the woman “several times in the head” when she tried to pull him away from the man.

Turnbull pleaded guilty to common assault, contravening a domestic violence order, and committing a public nuisance in the vicinity of a licensed premises.

He was given six months’ jail, suspended for 18 months.

Keiran Rhys Willett

A nasty workplace dispute ended in violence after a 27-year-old Dalby man savagely attacked another worker who was nearly 30 years older than him.

Dalby Magistrates Court heard Keiran Rhys Willett bashed his 55-year-old victim at a Brigalow worksite along the Warrego Highway on June 7.

Police prosecutor Derek Brady said the labourer punched the other man five to six times in the face, which resulted in a cut and swelling to the victim’s eye.

Willett admitted to the assault while speaking with police months later, saying he was involved in a verbal argument over a “work dispute” with the victim.

Willett pleaded guilty to assault occasioning bodily harm and was fined $1200 and ordered to pay compensation of $500.

No conviction was recorded.

Makayla Ann Donnelly

A Dalby mother couldn’t let it slide when another woman at a pub called her and her friend ‘fatties’, launching an assault and landing herself in court.

The court heard the attack occurred at the Criterion Hotel about 9pm on October 31, where Makayla Ann Donnelly became involved in a verbal exchange with another woman outside the toilets.

Police prosecutor Derek Brady said the 25-year-old then chased the victim and knocked her to the ground and wrestled her.

The defendant told police the victim had walked out of the bathroom and called Donnelly and her friend “fatties”.

Donnelly pleaded guilty to assault occasioning bodily harm, was fined $1300, and ordered to pay $700 compensation.

No conviction was recorded.

Jessica Joan Thompson

A Dalby woman exploded into a fit of rage after she discovered another woman at her partner’s home, and inflicted a savage attack on her.

Dalby Magistrates Court heard Jessica Joan Thompson assaulted her victim at her partner’s home by pulling and dragging her by the hair during a mad scuffle.

Police prosecutor Derek Brady said 28-year-old and her victim were eventually separated, before Thompson brutally kicked her victim in the head while she was on the ground.

Thompson pleaded guilty to one count of assault occasioning bodily harm and was fined $1000 and ordered to pay $300 compensation to her victim.

No conviction was recorded.
