Benjamine Mathew Carr sentenced in Dalby Magistrates Court for trying to spray blood on hospital staff

A Dalby father of three left hospital staff terrified after going on an expletive-filled rant and attempting to splash his blood on them after he was told that his surgery had been delayed, a court has been told.

A Dalby man has been labelled as “appalling” by a magistrate after a rampage through a hospital culminated in him attempting to spray blood on staff.

Benjamine Mathew Carr appeared in the Dalby Magistrates Court on Tuesday where he pleaded guilty to disorderly behaviour following an incident on March 4, 2025.

The court was told the 42-year-old was booked in for surgery at 3.30pm that day and had arrived at the Dalby Hospital at 9am to get prepped for the operation.

Close to the time he was due to go under the knife, staff informed him they would be unable to operate that day and he would need to come back at a later date.

Carr’s defence told the court their client hadn’t had anything to eat or drink for sometime in preparation for the surgery and had not taken his regular pain medication which went some way to explaining what happened next.

After being told he would not be receiving surgery that day Carr sprung from his bed and began looking for his clothes while swearing and pacing around.

When staff attempted to calm him down he called them c--ts and told a female nurse he would “f--k her up”.

After jumping out of bed Carr still had his cannula attached and when nurses asked him to let them remove it he ripped it out himself causing blood to spray towards staff who backed away.

After seeing them back away Carr walked towards them flicking his arm in an attempt to get blood on them.

Magistrate Kathleen Payne said she was appalled by Carr’s behaviour.

“It is appalling for a 42-year-old father of three to behave like this,” she said.

“Surgeries are rescheduled all the time, but you became upset and directed it at hospital staff.

“It is shocking to think people who are trying to care for people are treated that way because you can't control yourself.”

He was fined $800 and no conviction was recorded.
