You’ve turned off the highway, navigated the suburban streets and made your way to Shelter, an all-day restaurant overlooking the waves of Seven Mile Beach. This is how you want an oceanside restaurant to feel – a momentary solace from the stress of everyday life. At lunchtime, sun streams through wraparound windows, linen-clad staff greet guests with a smile, and you settle in for a modern, seafood-driven menu. There is tender octopus, charred on the hibachi grill and singing with smoky-sweet grapes; potato rolls brimming with creamy, briny spanner crab and spoonfuls of salmon roe; and snapper with crisp, golden skin and the twang of yuzu kosho sauce. The drinks list caters for all tastes, whether you’re shaking off the dust with a Bloody Mary, or easing into a lazy afternoon with natural fizz. Accommodation is available upstairs if you’re less keen for the drive home.
