Japanese$$
This little local is like a secret corner of Japan. from the decor and swift, friendly service to the concise menu and honest food. A simple plate of prawns with a light, crisp tempura coating and dot of wasabi says it all. Follow with delicate gyoza (dumplings stuffed with pork and cabbage), served with a sweet dipping sauce. And then there's okonomiyaki, the ever-popular student staple. Here it's a fluffy pancake layered with teriyaki chicken and cabbage and slathered with thick, jammy, apple-y sauce and a squiggle of mayo. There is nothing showy, either, about wagyu yakiniku-style, but the flavours are all there. seared strips of meat with a no-frills heap of fried-off onion, leek and ginger and a punchy ponzu (citrus soy) on the side. Don't get excited about green tea mousse, however. it's a calorific creation of white chocolate, cream and green tea powder topped with another whorl of whipped cream and choc chips. Skip it and sip some sake instead.
