A quick scan of the “large plates” section of the Barn menu might tell you all you need to know about its target diners: they want meat, and preferably large hunks of it. No complaints here, particularly on a chilly evening in the Central West. Parmesan-crumbed lamb cutlets with olive tapenade? Yes please. Roasted half chicken with buttered grains and jus gras? Go on.

There’s more nuance to be found though, more diversity at this airy, friendly space just outside Mudgee. Smoked trout rillettes with pickled shallots and salmon roe is a smart take on a classic, while burrata with roasted broccoli and confit garlic is given welcome texture from pangrattato’s crunch.

The wine list offers an impressive mix of local and international drops and service is friendly, if a little patchy.

Your go-to for a relaxed – and meaty – Mudgee day or night out.
