POLICE are still trying to piece together a series of events that led to the death of a young man and left a woman in hospital after alleged stabbing attacks in Darwin’s north.

The 20-year-old man was stabbed and later died after running to seek help for his injuries and the injured woman was hospitalised after the series of violent attacks in Karama late on Wednesday.

NT Police detectives on Thursday night were still looking for an “edged weapon” used in the incident and yet to establish how it unfolded.

Detective Senior Sergeant Jakson Evans said police believed one person was allegedly involved in both incidents.

Just before midnight on Wednesday, police were called to Kalymnos Dr, near the Karama Shopping Plaza, to reports of a stabbing.

Sergeant Evans said the victim was standing with his friends in the carpark of the Karama Shopping Centre when he was approached by a dark SUV.

He said two men got out of the car and allegedly stabbed the young man, who then ran down the street before returning and seeking help from workers at the shopping centre.

Investigation launched into ‘explosion’, fire at The Leprechaun Motel at Winnellie

Neptune NT security officers were first on scene.

Sergeant Evans said police were trying to establish a possible motive behind the attack.

“We’re still working through the relationship between the offenders and the first victim,” he said.

He said only one of the offenders allegedly stabbed the man.

St John paramedics attended and found the man in a critical condition. He was taken to Royal Darwin Hospital but pronounced deceased upon arrival.

Within the hour, a 25-year-old female was taken to RDH with significant injuries to her stomach after she was attacked on Wearing Cres – about 1km from the first incident.

Sergeant Evans said the SUV was then driven to the Wearing Cres address before the alleged offenders fled.

Investigators established a second crime scene at Wearing Cres with forensic and biology specialists inspecting the area.

Kalymnos Dr between Karama Cres and Dulverton Ct was closed for most of Thursday as officers gathered evidence.

Two men, aged 20 and 26, have been arrested and remain in police custody.

A witness, who did not want to be named, said he helped the woman after she ran to his aid, saying she had stab-like marks all over her body and back.

He described the weapon as being a serrated bread knife.

Resident of Wearing Cres Stephanie Parry said a woman went to her father-in-law’s house after being stabbed by her former partner on Wednesday night.

“He’s stabbed her, she’s gone to my father-in-law’s house, and she’s called out for him to, you know, call police and emergency services,” Ms Parry said. “He (Ms Parry’s father-in-law) said it was all done by midnight.”

The mother of two said she locked up her home, even padlocking the fence in an effort to keep her family safe.

“We’re all just a little bit over the constant abuse and people rocking up at three o’clock in the morning and yeah, it’s never ending.”

Another resident who did not want to be named said she had two dogs to protect her from any trouble.

A number of residents of Wearing Cres say there has been a lot of commotion at the address in recent weeks.

Sergeant Evans said the woman and the alleged offenders know each other.

It’s not clear what their relationship is.

Police late on Thursday were yet to find the weapon involved and yet to determine whether the same weapon was used in both attacks.

Officers were seen scouring both locations, including emptying industrial bins and stormwater drains.

The arrested men were found separately at properties in Karama and Winnellie.

The SUV was also found in Winnellie. Sergeant Evans said police had obtained CCTV but asked anyone with information to come forward and call police on 131 444 or Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000.
