THE fatal stabbing of a man in Karama overnight is the latest in a spate of crime and political incidents in the suburb.

NT Police have confirmed that an adult male was killed in a “serious assault” in the northern suburb last night, with two men being taken into custody.

It comes after a 21-year-old man faced court in March for allegedly sexually assaulting a three-year-old child as they played in their Karama front yard.

Just two weeks later, a local nail salon business was forced to close its doors and provide their services to vulnerable clients in their homes after a group of youths took over the store and raided drawers and the shop front for cash.

The incident sparked public outcry for local MLA Ngaree Ah Kit to do more about out-of-control crime in her electorate.

In a radio interview around two weeks later, Ms Ah Kit said “hundreds and hundreds of visitors” to her electorate had led to the spike in crime and anti-social behaviour.

“We’ve just had an influx of a lot more people making really bad decisions with their behaviour impacting on others,” she said on Mix 104.9FM

“The majority of people who are here visiting are here for the right reasons … it’s just a small cohort of them who often get intoxicated and run amok.”
