A teenager accused of taking part in an ambush where a young Darwin man was gunned down outside his home has been rushed from the court cells to hospital.
Matthyis Leedie, 19, was arrested in Karama on Thursday evening, 70 hours after a 23-year-old man was allegedly shot outside a Litchfield Court, Coconut Grove home.
NT Police said it was believed to be a “targeted attack”, with three people allegedly waiting outside the victim’s home before firing into the young man’s legs around 7pm on Monday, February 3.
Witnesses told the NT News that as the 23-year-old man was writhing in pain on the ground, members of the group allegedly punched and kicked him.
A St John’s Ambulance spokeswoman confirmed the 23-year-old was taken to hospital in a serious but stable condition.
NT Police said the victim had been shot in both legs.
Mr Leedie was the third man arrested in relation to the alleged shooting, with his co-accused Damon Matthew McCourt, 19, and Nathan Johnson, 22, appearing before Katherine Local Court on Thursday.
It is alleged Mr McCourt and Mr Johnson and an unnamed 22-year-old woman fled the scene in a black Mazda, driving 315km south to Katherine.
The suspected shooters were eventually stopped by police tyre deflation devices at 4am, Tuesday.
Police have alleged “multiple edged weapons” were found within the vehicle.
Mr McCourt and Mr Johnson were both charged with recklessly endangering life intending serious harm, causing harm, and theft, while the 22-year-old woman was released by police without any charges.
Both men appeared before Judge Ben O’Loughlin in Katherine Local Court and were remanded in custody until April 2.
Mr Leedie was arrested by police following a search warrant on a Karama home near Manunda Terrace at 5.40pm, Thursday.
He was charged with recklessly endangering life, aggravated robbery, unlawfully causing serious harm and going armed in public.
A NT Police spokesman confirmed there were no reports of injuries at the time of his arrest.
Mr Leedie was expected to appear before Judge Alan Woodcock on Friday, however as his case was called the Darwin Local Court was told he was “unwell”.
It is understood he suffered from a medical episode in the cells just before midday, requiring paramedics to attend.
A St Johns Ambulance spokesperson said they had received a call before midday on Friday.
Crews attended and took a status 3 patient from the Darwin Local Court to the Royal Darwin Hospital.
Mr Leedie’s loved ones waved he was driven away in the ambulance.
It remains unclear when his matter will return to the courts.
Another 19-year-old was also arrested in Palmerston on Thursday, but was released pending further investigations.
