A Gold Coast man is fighting for his life after his motorbike crashed on the M1 on Thursday afternoon.

The Gilston man was headed south on the Pacific Motorway at Molendinar about 5.30pm on Thursday when the black 2006 Yamaha XV1700 motorbike crashed.

The 53-year-old was taken to Gold Coast University Hospital with life threatening injuries.

It is not clear at this point what caused the crash.

The forensic crash unit is investigating.

Police are urging witness or anyone with dashcam footage of the incident to contact PoliceLink on 131 444 or their nearest police station.

In has been a horror few months for motorcyclists on Gold Coast roads.

In early April, Oxenford man Nick Caputo, 20, died in hospital after his motorbike and a horse float collided on Mundoolun Connection Road, Boyland.

That same week as moped rider Nath Lehane died after he crashed into a parked car at Miami.

In November last year a motorcyclist died following a crash in Broadbeach where a Varsity Lakes man came off his bike on Bermuda Street.

Also in November, a 29-year-old Carrara man died when travelling westbound along Hope St, Nerang when his bike collided with a truck.

In December, Robina man CK died when a motorbike rider collided with a Toyota Corolla at the Napper Rd and Parkwood Blvd intersection in Parkwood.

A 31-year-old Pimpama man died in January after his bike crashed on the M1 at Oxenford.
