Ormeau chemist targeted by thieves searching for medication, Gold Coast police investigating

Police are searching for four people who broke into a Gold Coast chemist in the city’s north in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Thieves have targeted a northern Gold Coast chemist for the second time in about 12 months, stealing drugs after smashing through the shop’s window.

Staff at the Amcal + Chemist in the Ormeau Shopping Village on Eggersdorf Rd were cleaning up glass and putting the shop back together after the smash and grab.

A group of four people used an unknown implement to smash the glass front door at the pharmacy about 1.45am on Wednesday.

Their attempts left an entire panel of the door shattered and in need of replacing.

The four stole medication before leaving in a blue Kia Sportage.

Police believe the car was stolen.

A manager at the store, who declined to be named, said staff were still taking stock of the damage.

She said they had to clean the entire store.

“It’s going to take us the entire day because glass goes through everything,” she said.

“We also have to take stock of the entire dispensary.

“It’s not what we wanted to wake up to.”

She said it is not the first time the chemist has been broken into with thieves targeting the shop about 12 months ago.

Forensic police officers arrived about 8am on Wednesday to comb through the store but it believed the four thieves were wearing gloves.

Customers were still coming an going from the pharmacy.

Investigations are ongoing.
