So who is the best hairdresser in Queensland? We asked readers to vote across all different regions of the state, with more than 80 salons in the running.

Earlier this year Nikki Court at Nikki’s Hair Design obliterated her Far North competition – now she has been named Queensland’s best as well.

The Cairns-based business scored 23 per cent of all votes to edge out Brisbane’s Elysium Hair for top billing.

“Once I started hairdressing here in Australia I never looked back,” Ms Court said in July after taking out the regional title.

“I’m just feeling truly blessed, it’s so incredible to have clients that are confident enough in my work that they’ll back me like this.”

House of York Hair Design claimed top spot in Caboolture but can it also take the honours in the state?

CAIRNS

After more than 700 nominations and 400 votes, Nikki Court at Nikki’s Hair Design obliterated her competition and took top spot as the best hairdresser in Cairns.

Based out of an at-home salon, Ms Court has been in Australia for the last 30 years and fixing up Cairns’ residents hair for the last 27.

Ms Court has over 400 clients herself, all of which are loyal to her and her craft.

“Once I started hairdressing here in Australia I never looked back,” Ms Court said.

“I’m just feeling truly blessed, it’s so incredible to have clients that are confident enough in my work that they’ll back me like this.”

Ms Court took 22 per cent of all the 431 votes.

A much-loved shop took the No.1 spot for the third time in Townsville.

Emphasis Hair Studio has been servicing the Townsville community for nearly 20 years, its customer service and expert stylists building a loyal client base.

The friendly, lighthearted environment can be attributed to its owners Kellie and Keenan Rout.

A Townsville local, Mrs Rout began her hairdresser apprenticeship at 17.

After a decade of honing her craft and building up relationships with clients, she and her husband took a much-needed trip abroad.

While travelling the couple began to focus on self-development and the next step in their lives and careers.

WHITSUNDAYS AND BOWEN

A home salon turned thriving business, Jayde Loree Hair Studio, was crowned Whitsundays and Bowen’s best hairdressing salon of 2023.

With a lifelong passion for hairdressing, Jayde Loree Rogers started her hairdressing career as soon as she could, at the young age of 14 and 9 months old, moving from Bowen to Cairns to complete her apprenticeship.

“I was working at the Hairhouse Warehouse salon in Cairns for a few years while I was qualifying,” Mrs Rogers said.

Qualified at 17, Mrs Rogers has “lived and breathed hairdressing” for the last 18 years, moving to salons across Queensland, Melbourne and South Australia.

“I worked in a few different hairdressers in Mackay and Walkerston, as well as taking a short stint of a year in both Melbourne and South Australia,” she said.

GLADSTONE

A home salon turned thriving business was crowned Gladstone’s best hairdressers, thanks to its owner and only stylist, Lynette Rogers.

Mrs Rogers opened Simply Hairlicious Hair Salon in the downstairs area of her home in 2014, and has since moved into a salon in January last year.

Starting her hairdressing career straight out of high school, Mrs Rogers always knew she wanted to be a hairdresser and has spent the last 22 years in the industry.

“I love doing hair, its my passion, always has and always will be,” she said.

“It’s not very often you can go to work and enjoy it all the time.”

Originally from Blackall, Queensland, Mrs Rogers moved around a lot between Maryborough, Rockhampton, Cairns and the Sunshine Coast, before finally planting her roots in Gladstone.

Bullied girl gets makeover of her dreams

ROCKHAMPTON

After hundreds of nominations and votes the winner of Rockhampton’s best hairdresser 2023 has been decided.

Dulcet Hairdressing, based on Rockhampton’s northside, received the most votes out of the 64 nominees.

The salon is owned by hairdresser of 22 years Stella Bishell, who began her business as a home salon.

She opened her shop front on Musgrave St in Berserker two years ago and works with her dedicated team of stylists.

“I’m very proud of what we’ve created, my team works very hard, they’re all beautiful, kind, strong women,” she said.

“I think what I’m most proud of is how welcome they make everybody feel.”

SUNSHINE COAST

The best hairdressers of the Sunshine Coast were named by readers who voted to show their support for their regular hair salon.

Dannielle Rossetto and Jayde Smith from Coastal Artistry were crowned as winner.

More than 170 people voted in the poll.

Ms Rossetto and Ms Smith were “thrilled” when they heard the news of the win.

“We are both so excited and amazed by the incredible support that we have from our loyal clients,” Ms Rossetto and Ms Smith said.

The pair have more than 17 years of experience in the industry and have been working together for years.

“We aim to provide the ultimate pampering experience for every client,” they said.

It has been named Australian Salon of the Year seven times, and co-owner Kate Henderson said Elysium Hair Brisbane celebrates the stories of their guests by creating “fabulous hair memories”.

“We’re not just about the snip-snip and the colour magic. We’re all about the feeling when you step out with hair that has got its own fan club,” she said after claiming top honours in the best summer hairdresser in Brisbane competition.

Focusing on recycling and repurposing, Ms Henderson said the a major focus of the business is to “pamper mother Earth”.

Celebrity hairdresser describes horror accident

BUNDABERG

More than 300 300 votes delivered a shock result in the hunt for the region’s best in 2023, with people split on the winner of the crown.

It was a tight competition with not one, but two hairdressers tying for the top spot following a frenzied week of voting.

Claire Mallows from the Place Hairdressing and Kala Duffy from Bella Donna Hair and Makeup tied with 8 per cent of the votes each.

The owner of Bella Donna, Mrs Duffy has been a local name in hair for two decades and this continued presence a drove support behind the voting.

She first took on an apprenticeship at Bella Donna in 2003 and within three years was running it.

“I just love hairdressing,” she said.

GYMPIE

Hair Review in Mary Street, which took out 23 per cent of the votes, claimed top honours in Gympie.

The competition was tough, with 30 nominated hair salons vying for the top prize and hundreds of people voting for their one favourite.

“My heart was bursting with joy this morning after finding out that we had one this incredible accolade,” owner Carolann Verity said.

Client Jenny Ross professed to voting in the poll as she had her hair cut by Rance Boreham.

The winner of Ipswich’s best salon was Lily Me Red in West Ipswich.

Shannon McPhee, owner of Lily Me Red, has taken her business from strength to strength in its 13 years in business.

With five staff and a brand new salon opened up in the Gold Coast, along with their flagship in West Ipswich, Lily Me Red, prides themselves on specialising in “lived-in looks, lifestyle-friendly colouring and on trend foiling techniques.”

“I have been in the industry for over 28 years now and love seeing my apprentices achieve their goals,” Ms McPhee said.

“Collectively throughout our salons I believe in education and passing on my knowledge to my team in any way I can.”

“We love Ipswich and our beautiful friendly clients and now with our new salon, we hope to stamp our passion for hair on the Gold Coast as well.”

Working as a hairdresser for 15 years, Robbie Verwey has a passion for the industry and loves making his clients feel and look amazing through their hair.

Starting his hair journey in Central Queensland, Mr Verwey then went on to complete his apprenticeship through the Brisbane School of Hairdressing.

Moving to Toowoomba six years ago, Mr Verwey began his own business in his garage which quickly grew from there.

Having now found its forever home on Duggan St, the team at Atchara Salons strives to make every guest feel valued and welcomed.

Mr Verwey said every hairdresser is polite and genuine, and allows each client to feel part of the team.

FRASER COAST

A Tinana home salon with a welcoming atmosphere and a four-legged assistant has been voted as the Fraser Coast’s best hairdresser.

After working as a hairdresser since 2009, Tash Kruske decided working in a busy salon wasn’t for her and started her own home salon, Tash’s Hair House.

“I prefer the one-on-one experience compared to a busy salon, and I know a lot of my clients do as well,” she said.

The Fraser Coast Chronicle asked readers to nominate their favourite hairdresser and Miss Kruske’s salon was voted as the region’s favourite, followed by Supreme Hair Artistry and La Lars.

Miss Kruske started the salon in her living room nine years ago but now operates it from a newly renovated granny flat at her 1.6ha Tinana property.
