Direct flights between Hervey Bay and Melbourne will now increase to four days a week, thanks to the success of the Jetstar service.

On Tuesday, Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said he welcomed the increase in direct Melbourne flights.

“We are constantly working to increase the number of flights and destinations being serviced through the Hervey Bay airport,” Mr Seymour said in a statement.

“These direct flights are important for our local economy and provide vitally important connectivity for local residents to stay in touch with interstate family and friends.”

The Hervey Bay airport has direct flights to Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, and Lady Elliot Island.

“These routes into Hervey Bay have proven to be very popular and we are hopeful of seeing them increase,” Mr Seymour said.

Under the newly announced schedule, there will be direct Hervey Bay to Melbourne flights on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday.

It comes after the success of the flights, which were introduced last year, was revealed in January.

At the time, Mr Seymour said the average seat occupancy on flights was more than 90 per cent.

“The service is proving popular with locals visiting family and friends, while also attracting more tourists from Victoria” he said

“Hervey Bay Airport has seen a 38 per cent increase in passengers from 2023 to 2024, driven by both visitors and locals.”

Mr Seymour also said the popularity of the Melbourne flights was a positive sign for the region.

“I think the success of the Melbourne flights has shown the attractiveness of us as a destination as well as the desire of locals to travel.”

At the time, Mr Seymour also revealed there had been interest in offering a service from an airline in Adelaide.
