KEDRON WAVELL v COMMERCIAL
JT1 GRAND FINAL
Commercial goalie Kaylee Thistlethwaite saved the day in a dramatic penalty shoot-out grand final win by her side over a gallant Kedron Wavell at the State Hockey Centre tonight.
Kedron Wavell surged from a 2-nil deficit five minutes from fulltime to score two goals, by Olivia McManus and Phoebe Lingard, to draw level at 2-all and force the game into a shoot out.
It was then down to the respective goalies, Thistlethwaite (Commercial) and Maddie Jones.
Ironically Commercial coach Graham Taylor said only a couple of weeks ago he did some extra work with Thistlethwaite who was not confident she would stand up to the rigors of a penalty shoot out.
“It (the extra work) paid off tonight,’’ said Commercial coach Taylor.
Kedron Wavell’s stunning resurgence was a bolt from the blue.
“At two-nil in the second half I was thinking just hold this. Five minutes to go 2-1, I was thinking slow the game down.’’
Kedron Wavell coach Emily Negney was rightly proud of her team.
“It was an amazing comeback, to never give up, to support each other, to end up to get to a point where there was a shoot out was amazing,’’ she said.
Sienna Graham’s goal about 13 minutes from time seemed a down payment on victory for the Commercial club after Freya Horton’s first half strike into the back of the net.
ARANA ASCOT V KEDRON WAVELL
13 YEARS T1
Kedron Wavell clinched a 2-1 victory over fast finishing Arana Ascot, surviving a penalty stroke attempt after the full-time siren has sounded.
It was a grand final thriller, with Kedron Wavell dominating for opening third of the game, only to be almost swamped by Arana Ascot.
After two goals from Lily Punch, Arana Ascot surged back in the second half with a goal to Josie Burgess.
Kara Bradley also imposed herself on the match for Arana Ascot, but in the end Kedron Wavell held on.
“I think we stayed with our game plan, even though it looked like we struggled in the second half,’’ said Kedron Wavell coach Pam Patterson.
“The players knew how important it was to maintain composure. That and not giving up.’’
It was like the two teams swapped jerseys at halftime, so good were Arana Ascot in the second half.
Earlier, Kedron Wavell carried a 2-nil advantage into the second half after two fantastic goals from Punch.
Punch expertly capitalised on her side having more time on the ball and more circle entries.
But there was a momentum shift toward the end of the half which would have given Arana Ascot encouragement.
On one occasion Kara Bradley threatened, but the Kedron Wavell defensive sticks blocked her access to the goals.
Kedron Wavell had three early penalty corners, but the Arana Ascot defence held firm.
That was until Punch twice found the back of the goals, on the second occasion producing a clever back hander.
ARANA ASCOT v EASTS CARINA
UNDER 18 J2
It was appropriate the decider finished with a shared premiership last night given not a struck match separated the teams when they also met earlier in the season.
Arana Ascot coach Diana Burton said her girls were mildly disappointed at not getting the outright premiership shield after finishing on top of the ladder during the home-and-away season, but said the nil-all draw was the right result on the night.
“We would have hoped for more, but we put in the effort and didn’t lose. I could not fault their effort,’’ she praised.
It was a frenetic second half, with both teams generating enough half chances to claim victory.
But finals are also about defensive desperation, and there was plenty of that on show tonight.
Lily Richard of Easts created an opportunity for Zoe Jones, but Arana goalie Sohie Pale came forward to deflect Jones’ shot.

Then Bailey Jackson chipped low toward goal for Arana, but this time the Easts goalie Anastasia Long was up to the task.
Queensland representative Georgia Harris then slammed a penalty corner just wide as the game started to open up.
Harris then saved the day for Arana at the other end of the pitch when Easts threatened. The match finished with both teams trying to set up winning goals via penalty corners.
In the first half Easts Anna Gunew missed scoring by a lick of paint, so close did the ball miss the goal by.
Arana’s Ashley McGinn made one inspiring run down the wing to put her side deep into attack, but the Easts defence scrambled.
Easts Carina and Arana Ascot dead heated in the first half, with neither team scoring.
It was a half of equal possession with lots of turnovers making it a battle of the midfield.
