Britt Wilkinson discusses the new Hockey One national league which comes to Brisbane this weekend

Britt Wilkinson discusses the new Hockey One national league concept which comes to Brisbane’s Queensland Hockey Centre this weekend. Analiese Stitt reports.

Work experience student Analiese Stitt spoke with Britt Wilkinson about the new Hockey One national league concept which comes to Brisbane this weekend.

Kedron Wavell striker Britt Wilkinson will take to the field for the Brisbane Blaze on Sunday in the newly formed national hockey league competition called Hockey One.

The competition replaces the Australian Hockey League and is made up of teams from Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra, Melbourne, New South Wales, Perth and Tasmania all competing for the number one spot in Australian Hockey.

Having previously played for the Queensland Scorchers in the AHL, Wilkinson said Hockey One was an exciting concept.

“It’s a great experience. It’s really hard and the standard of competition is always really high,” she said.

The new competition sees some new rules including a conversion rule in which a scoring player is given another opportunity for a goal, in a one-on-one with the keeper.

“It means you can always stay in the game if you’re down. You always have the chance to get two goals and get back in it,” said Wilkinson, who went to primary school at Wilston State School.

Selection for the Blaze was also an exciting opportunity for the past student of Clayfield College to continue her representative career.

“I’m one of the older strikers now, so I’m helping mentor some of the new girls. I’d like to just keep scoring goals and keep giving a consistent performance,” she said.

Brisbane Blaze will host the Tassie Tigers in Friday’s double header at the Queensland Hockey Centre while on Sunday the Blaze then confront Perth Thundersticks.

“I’m stoked to be playing in front of my friends and family. It will be great to see the Brisbane community come out and watch,” she said.

The Blaze women are currently fourth, coming off the back of a 4-2 win over ladder leaders Adelaide Fire.
