Wishart’s Georgia Hillas will follow in her mother’s footsteps when she makes her debut for Queensland in the Australian Hockey League which starts on Saturday.
Hillas, 22, an Easts Hockey Club junior, said she was surprised but proud to follow her mother Lorraine into a state side.
“It was really unexpected to make the Scorchers,’’ Hillas said.
“She (her mother) is very excited about it. The family were not expecting it.
“I gave them a call and they were shocked.’’
Hillas said her mum, a 1984 and 1988 Olympian, had played a huge role in her career.
“She has always been really supportive,’’ Hillas said.
“She has been my coach for most of my life
“If it was not for her I would not be where I am today.’’
A past student of at Catherine’s Primary School and Loreto College, Hillas said it was her mother who introduced her to the sport aged seven.
However Hillas did have three years away from playing competitive hockey in her late teens, only returning to the cut and thrust fray of Division 1 hockey last season.
“I thought that was it for me, but I really missed it,’’ Hillas said.
“I missed the competitive aspect of playing with the team and being involved in the culture that comes with team sport.’’
She said she was open minded entering the Australian Hockey League.
“It will be a huge step up and a high level,’’ she said.
“But I just want to get out and do my best.
“I am looking forward to being back playing with the girls I used to play with.’’
