Historic real increase to minimum wage ‘not sustainable’

Businesses say the workplace tribunal has underestimated the sluggishness of productivity growth in handing down the biggest real rise in the minimum wage since the pandemic, which they warn will be unsustainable for small employers without urgent economic reform.

The Fair Work Commission on Tuesday awarded an increase of 3.5 per cent to 2.6 million workers on minimum award rates in a bid to catch up on real wage cuts over the past four years due to soaring inflation.
