Melbourne Uni’s $72m deal to settle backpay case sets precedent

The University of Melbourne has agreed to pay thousands of casual academics and other staff a record $72 million to settle an underpayments lawsuit in a deal that sets a precedent for other major employers.

Unions claimed the outcome was a major win in combatting systemic underpayments after the university agreed to the backpay and to overhaul its compliance systems in exchange for the Fair Work Ombudsman stopping its Federal Court action.
