Growing up on Sydney’s leafy north shore, Nick Hamilton, chief executive of $4 billion investment management group Challenger Limited, assumed he would become a pilot.

His father was a pilot at Qantas and an offshore cargo operator, and his mother was a stewardess until she was forced to resign when Hamilton’s elder brother was born.
