We have $360,000 in super. Are we wealthy enough for an SMSF?
There has been much debate about the appropriate dollar threshold for do-it-yourself super.
Dear Ms Wise, I have a super balance of $270,000 and my wife has $90,000 in super. Is our combined $360,000 enough to warrant us setting up a self-managed super fund? Gary.
The wisdom: The Australian Securities and Investments Commission previously suggested the minimum balance for an SMSF was $500,000, but in the past few years this has been revised down. Now $200,000 is considered by many to be the minimum super balance at which an SMSF can make financial sense.
