The Reserve Bank’s eagerly awaited decision statement on Tuesday explained why the board chose to cut the cash rate for the first time in more than four years.

The brief statement referenced the progress on inflation, weaker demand from the private sector and easing of wage demands as providing sufficient confidence that inflation is returning to its target band.
