First memory of boxing?
Watching Mike Tyson fight, which was very different to my first experience of boxing. As a 17-year-old, after being drafted to play AFL for Fitzroy Football Club, I was light and unfit relative to the older, more experienced, players, so I decided to give boxing a go in a dodgy little place in Melbourne’s Moonee Ponds, to build muscle, strength and fitness. I got in the ring for a sparring session on the first day. I thought I did OK for a first session, but to be honest I was pretty much a human punching bag for the other bloke. Even with that, I enjoyed the sparring. It was a challenge, and while I improved a lot with training, I quickly realised I had a lot of work to do on my technique and fitness if I wanted to be competitive.
