Those long queues for baked treats at Port Elliot definitely live up to the hype, but a new South Australian bakery has taken over this year’s crown as the best of the best in SA.

North Adelaide’s Bakery on O’Connell is the state’s overall best bakery for 2021, and was also named top in the city category as voted by advertiser.com.au readers in our latest Delicious Local poll.

Last year’s overall winner Port Elliot Bakery was runner-up overall, while taking out the best in the SA Country category.

For many visitors to the Fleurieu Peninsula, a visit to the Port Elliot bakery is a must-do – it is not unusual to see people lined up well out the door on the bakery’s busy periods. “We never dreamt the Port Elliot bakery would become so popular but along with our products, we have a great location – right next to Horseshoe Bay and in a lovely town,” part-owner Sharon Horrocks said.

A Hills stalwart in all things sweet and savoury, Lobethal Bakery has been a local favourite for 47 years. “I think the consistency and the quality of our food is why we’re so popular and that’s really something that needs to be there,” owner Albert Trinkle said.

It’s been serving up freshly baked goods since at least 1944 but now this Mount Gambier institution has been named best bakery in the Limestone Coast. Dewain and Allison Barrett took over OK Pie Shop almost two years ago. “You get people who say ‘I had Cornish pastry and a jam doughnuts when I was 12 and they’re still the same when I’m 70’,” Mrs Barrett said.

Dedication to customer service and authentic German baking is a core focus of the 25-year-old Tanunda Bakery. Owner Elka Trinkale said they were conscious of providing Australian baked good staples to customers as well as traditional German items like bienenstich, German yeast cake and streusel buns.

From its unassuming spot on the corner of Seventh Ave, this St Peters bakery has established itself as a staple for local customers. “We offer a huge range now including vegan and gluten free and we’ve tried to always change with the times,” owner Damien Obst – who has owned the shop for 23 years – said.

Father and son duo Nick and Jayme Davey are no strangers to success, winning a long list of awards in the 18 years they have been running the business, including taking out the title of Australia’s best pastie 10 years in a row. “When you come into the shop, you’ll be getting the same pastie we entered in the competition,” Jayme said.

They don’t make over-the-top doughnuts to post on Instagram or even have a Facebook page but Clarendon Bakery has garnered itself a cult following of loyal customers. “We sell old school style cakes and buns that your parents would’ve grown up with rather than some of those newer flavours like nutella and salted caramel,” Owner Nathan Gelencher said.

In a fitting way to celebrate their 25 years in business, the Dittmar family of the Fabulous Baker Boys Bakery at Pooraka has been named the best in the north. Paul said the bakery is known for its great pies including chunky potato and bacon, chilli cheese, and its sausage rolls.
