It draws queues more than half a kilometre long filled with tourists and locals alike, so it’s no surprise this bakery has been crowned the best in country SA.

For many visitors to the Fleurieu Peninsula, a visit to the Port Elliot bakery is a must-do.
It is not unusual to see people lined up well out the door on the bakery’s busy periods, so it’s no surprise it was crowned the winner in our Delicious Local poll, attracting 30 per cent of the vote.
The Port Elliot Bakery is no stranger to success – having also won the title of best bakery in the state last year.
It is a true family enterprise, with 15 different family members working in the business, many of them bakers by trade.
Part-owner Sharon Horrocks said the family had been running the bakery for more than 30 years.
“We celebrated our 30th anniversary in 2019,” she said.
“It had always been a bakery from about 1860s, but when we started up in 1989 it had been closed for a decade.”
Word of mouth has contributed to the bakery’s success over the decades, and now it draws hungry punters from across the state.
One of the most popular items is the bakery’s Donut of the Month – a concept created by Sharon’s daughter Chelsea Horrocks.
Another one of the bakery’s most popular items is the vegetarian pastie.
“My father Christopher Gorman is a vegetarian and started off making vegetarian pasties. He’s now 75 and still making the same pastie,” Sharon said.
Sharon’s husband Andrew Horrocks comes up with another of the bakery popular good’s – the Pie of the Month.
Sharon said it was an honour to be named best bakery in country SA.
“I think people just really enjoy the taste and the freshness of our products,” she said.
“We never dreamt the Port Elliot bakery would become so popular but along with our products, we have a great location – right next to Horseshoe Bay and in a lovely town.”
Rounding out the top five places to grab a baked good in country SA were Yankalilla Bakery at Yankalilla, Kiplings Bakery at Port Wakefield, Heritage Pies & Pastries at Goolwa and the Country Bakehouse at Loxton.
