They don’t make over-the-top doughnuts to post on Instagram or even have a Facebook page but Clarendon Bakery has garnered itself a cult following of loyal customers.
The small country-style bakery – which has just eight staff – was voted as best bakery in Adelaide’s south in our latest Delicious local poll.
Owner Nathan Gelencher said keeping things simple and traditional had been the key to the bakeries success during his time there.
“For us it’s all about our customers, the Clarendon family if you will,” he said.
“We’re passionate about what we do and what we create but that’s just one part of it, it’s also about the customers smiles, being a meeting place for the community and having that country feel.
“We sell old school style cakes and buns that your parents would’ve grown up with rather than some of those newer flavours like nutella and salted caramel.”
But there is one more unique cake that Mr Gelencher said has become a key attraction for customers during its six year stint on the menu.
“We do have a Black Forest cream doughnut which you don’t see everywhere and that draws a lot of attention,” he said.
“It has a serious cult following, that’s for sure.”
The Grants Gully Road bakery received more than 15 per cent of reader votes in the poll run in conjunction with celebrity food personality Matt Preston.
Aldinga’s Home Grain Bakery was voted second best in the region with Coromandel Valley Bake Bakery taking out third.
