A man has been flown to a Brisbane hospital after a desperate rescue was sparked when a car crashed 10m down an embankment on the Bruce Hwy.
The major road remains closed following the horror crash.
A Queensland Ambulance Service spokeswoman said paramedics were called to the crash at Bells Bridge about 12.50pm today.
A car went 10m down an embankment where it crashed into trees and a man was trapped.
The paramedic spokeswoman said a rescue helicopter was called to the scene and the man was flown to the Royal Brisbane Women's Hospital in a serious condition with a head injury.
A Queensland Fire and Emergency Service spokeswoman said firefighters had arrived about 1.10pm and spent 20 minutes with cutting gear freeing the man.
They had then set up a hauling system to bring him back to the roadside, she said.
A Queensland Police Service spokeswoman said the highway was closed following the crash in both directions with north-bound traffic quickly banking up about 5km.
Police say the highway will remain closed for some time, with traffic being diverted, as the forensic crash unit investigates.
