St Ali
Contemporary$$
St Ali, which now has a sister store in London, is part of Salvatore Malatesta's ever-growing empire. This St Ali, in a post-industrial warehouse down a skinny lane, is still the spunky flagship. Beans are big business and roasted on site; from the Slayer to the syphon, you'll get a good brew. On the consistently good food front, the corn cakes- fried, light-brown nuggets of goodness- are winners, as are the 'dutch oven' baked beans, given a summery treatment with butter beans, cherry tomatoes and basil leaves. Seriously handsome cakes sit by the register for impulse buying; the dense and sticky brownies are worth the extra spin class.
