Smarter than the average Randwick Indonesian, Jimbaran sets the scene with low lighting, tinkling gamelan music and sweet, batik-clad waitstaff. Little touches make a difference, too: tiny satay sticks served on a mini brazier, a list of interesting chef's specials such as flaky-crunchy crisped duck served with tangy sambal and thick kecap manis; and delicately coloured krupuk (crackers) decorating the various nasi goreng dishes (try the version with chicken and petai - broad bean-like 'stink beans'). Flavours can be a little muted but everything comes with a smile. And the generous Indonesian soups - chicken with fishballs, turmeric-laced soto ambengan and hearty oxtail - are definitely a cut above.
