It’s a rite of passage for any couple: will our relationship survive the ultimate test — assembling flatpack furniture together?

Three years ago, when my partner and I moved into our new home, we took on the daunting task of building a bed frame. It started with the usual optimism (we’ll get this done in an hour tops right?) but within the hour, the atmosphere had turned icy. The instructions made zero sense and the tiny diagrams didn’t match up with the piles of parts and screws provided. Of course, we blamed each other.

What should have been a quick project ended up taking the entire day, with multiple breaks to cool off. Eventually, we managed to assemble the frame — no thanks to the manual but through sheer trial and error, and a lot of muscle to force parts into place.

We promised ourselves, never again. Next time, we’d hire someone.

Fast forward to the end of last year. Our budget bed frame had begun sagging and creaking. We couldn’t put it off any longer — we needed a new one. But after our traumatic experience that still haunts us to this day, our number one non-negotiable was the new bed had to be easy to assemble.

Enter Eva. I had seen this Australian furniture brand all over my social media and was immediately drawn to their minimalist aesthetic. But what really sold me was the promise their bed frames were not only easy to assemble and disassemble, but required no tools. No screwdriver or allen key? Sign me up.

I decided on the Delve Bed Frame, their newest and latest design. While Eva’s original frame, the Timber Bed Frame, is a popular choice, I was drawn to the cozy yet luxe vibe of the Delve. Plus, it came in a variety of fabrics and colours, as well as access to under bed storage. After much deliberation, I chose the Chunky Weave fabric in Sand.

So, did my relationship survive the assembly of the Eva Delve Bed Frame? Read on to find out.

In today’s modern world, I’m used to delivery times being more of an estimate than a guarantee. But the delivery of the Eva Delve Bed Frame was impressively fast. I placed my order on a Tuesday, and it arrived the very next day.

The customer service and communication were exceptional. I received a call midmorning informing me that the truck had broken down, and the delivery would be delayed by an hour or two. I appreciated the heads-up as it allowed me to adjust my plans and be home. The delivery driver also called to confirm I was at home to receive the package, and went the extra mile by delivering the boxes straight to my apartment (though, to be fair, I do live on the ground floor).

If you’re in a metro area and place your order before 3pm on weekdays, you can expect next-day delivery. Plus, you can choose your delivery date up to three months in advance, which is a handy feature.

HOW EASY IS IT TO ASSEMBLE?

The Eva Delve Bed Frame arrived in four boxes: two long ones for the frame, a large square box for the headboard, and a smaller one containing the slats and sideboards.

A word of warning: these boxes are heavy.

Eva recommends two people for assembly, and I’d agree — it’s definitely a two-person job (for both muscle and moral support, or maybe not — more on that later). However, it’s possible to assemble it with just one person if you’re up for the challenge.

The instructions are available online on the Eva website, which means no paper wastage. Most importantly though, they’re clear, easy to follow, and actually correspond with labels on the bed parts. A refreshing change, right?

True to their word, no tools were required. Instead, the Delve uses hand screws — big, easy-to-turn screws that you can twist with your hands. Who knew it could be that simple? This was especially appreciated after I’d spent the previous hour dismantling my old bed frame, which seemed to have a million screws for no discernible reason.

So, just how easy was the Delve Bed Frame to assemble?

Thankfully, Eva wasn’t exaggerating when they promised their bed frames are easy to build. The instructions guided us through each step in a methodical, systematic way. The screws and holes aligned perfectly, and the fabric covers simply velcroed on, making them easy to remove for washing.

We did have one hiccup, though — hot tip: don’t trust your partner when he says the sides of the mattress are the same. Turns out, there’s a left and right side, so be sure to note this before fitting the covers. We discovered our mistake when it came time to slot in the bed heads, and they just wouldn’t fit. Looking on the bright side: I did get to test how easy the bed was to disassemble, and it was a breeze to unscrew the hand screws and reconfigure everything. Now I know this bed will be easy to deconstruct when we move in the future.

Let’s face it: building flatpack furniture is never going to be anyone’s favourite activity. But given that I didn’t have a meltdown during the process, I consider it a major win. So yes, I can confidently say that building the Eva Delve Bed Frame was as painless and easy as bed frame construction can be.

HOW SUPPORTIVE AND COMFORTABLE IS THE EVA DELVE BED FRAME?

Confession: I have never really thought about how important a bed frame is for a good night’s sleep. In the past, I’ve invested in high-quality, expensive mattresses but skimped on the cost of the bed frame. After all, you sleep directly on the mattress, so how much of a difference could the bed frame really make? I was wrong — so wrong.

The Eva Delve Bed Frame is incredibly solid and sturdy, providing exceptional support and comfort. I noticed the difference immediately after my first night’s sleep on it.

My partner and I have very different sleep patterns — he’s a late sleeper and a restless tosser and turner, while I’m a light sleeper. That meant every time he got into bed or shifted, I’d more than likely feel it. Now, I realise it was our old bed frame causing the issue.

With the Delve Bed Frame’s rock-solid construction, I barely feel any movement at all — even during Sydney’s current humid heatwave, when there’s been plenty of tossing and turning.

It’s clear to me now: the sturdiness of your bed frame directly impacts the comfort and support of your mattress, and in turn, your quality of sleep.

HOW MUCH DOES THE EVA DELVE BED FRAME COST?

The Eva Delve Bed Frame is available in Double, Queen and King size.

In a word: Yes.

In more words, the Eva Delve Bed Frame is exceptionally sturdy and solid, making a significant difference in your sleep set up.

You truly get what you pay for. I used to think I could settle for a cheap frame, but the Delve has shown me that investing in a quality bed frame is absolutely worth it. While it’s not the cheapest option, it offers excellent value for the price.

What’s more, it’s easy to assemble with no tools required. The frame also comes in a variety of fabrics and colours to suit your style, and the removable, machine-washable covers are a big plus.

After several weeks of sleeping on the Eva Delve Bed Frame, I’m happy with every aspect — how it looks, how it feels, and most importantly, how well I sleep on it.
